Manali Adventures by Season: Skiing, Paragliding, Rafting and Treks

Manali has adventure all year, but not the same adventure. Snow, wind and river levels decide what runs, so it pays to match your plan to the month you travel.

Winter (December to February): skiing and snow

Solang Valley's lower slopes are wide and gentle, which makes them good for first-time skiers. A beginner lesson usually lasts about 2 hours and covers putting on skis, stopping (the "pizza" or snowplough), turning and riding the small slope. Skis, boots and poles are included; wear waterproof pants, gloves and layers.

  • Fresh snow depends on the year; January is usually the most reliable month.
  • Roads can close after heavy snowfall. Keep a flexible day in your plan.
  • Paragliding may pause in heavy snow or strong winds.

Spring and early summer (March to June): the busiest season

This is when everything runs. Tandem paragliding at Solang gives a short flight over the valley with a trained pilot; you only need to run a few steps at take-off and sit back. Beas rafting from Pirdi to Jhiri near Kullu is about 14 km of cold, fast water, usually rated Grade II to III, and is great for groups. The snow line moves up, which opens day treks towards Dhundi and Beas Kund.

Monsoon (July to August): go easy

Heavy rain brings landslides on the highway and high water in the Beas. Rafting and most flying stop. If you travel now, keep it to cafés, short walks and indoor plans, and check road updates before you leave Delhi or Chandigarh.

Autumn (September to November): clear skies

After the rains, the air is clear and the views are the sharpest of the year. Paragliding and treks are excellent. Rafting often restarts once the river settles, though the water is cold by November. Nights drop close to freezing, so pack a warm jacket.
